Stephanie sheds light on the realities faced by incarcerated women in her new book “HIDDEN HEALERS: The Unexpected Ways Women in Prison Help each Other Survive.” The book highlights the brutalities these women endure within a system not designed for them. In our conversation she emphasizes the kindness they offer each other to navigate their challenges. It’s essential to recognize that the majority of women in the criminal justice system have themselves been victims of harm.
‘We see many more women because they don’t have the money for the bond, not be able to get out while they’re waiting for a court date. Women who have not been sentenced, who have not been found guilty, but their families are being impacted.’
Stephanie is a pioneer in the fields of addiction, trauma and recovery. She is the Co-Director of the Center for Gender and Justice in Southern California.
